Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. I love thick sweaters, cozy blankets, fall decorations, and I especially enjoy all the seasonal tastes and smells of fall. There are certain foods and seasonings that go hand in hand with the arrival of cooler weather.
Pumpkin. Oh, what’s not to love about pumpkin? Pumpkins are so versatile. From the traditional jack-o-lantern, to pumpkin lattes, soups, stews, pies, and so many other wonderful desserts, pumpkin recipes seem to welcome the fall season. Don’t be afraid to try new recipes when it comes to pumpkin. Have you tried starting your morning with pumpkin pancakes? Build A Menu has one your whole family is sure to love. Try out our Perfect Pumpkin Pancakes. Yum!
Apples. While you can purchase apples year round, fall is when you will find them newly picked. Try checking out your local farmer’s market for the freshest varieties. Apples are another food that goes well with the cooler weather change. When I think of pairing apples and fall, I imagine caramel apples, apple pies, and baked apples. Build A Menu has a recipe that my family loves and my kids enjoy helping me prepare. Try our Red Hot Baked Apples recipe for yourself!
Fall/Winter Squash. Fall is the time to take advantage of the fall/winter squashes. There are so many wonderful recipes that use these varieties of squash. If you are looking for a meal that will warm your family up on a cool fall evening, then our Chili with Butternut Squash will do the trick. Not only is it a healthy recipe (and gluten free), but it costs an average of $10 for the ingredients at most grocery stores and easily serves 4-6 people.
Spices. Think cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and other wonderful spices that seem to shout autumn! When the weather turns cool, I bring out my cinnamon-scented candles so my whole house smells like fall. One recipe that Build A Menu features is a slow cooker recipe that will have your whole home smelling delicious. Try our Cinnamon Chicken recipe and see for yourself. This is another great budget-friendly recipe that costs an average of $10 for the ingredients at most grocery stores.
There are so many foods that are wonderful in the fall season and everybody has their favorites. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your recipes. For more wonderful, budget-friendly recipe ideas, check out Build A Menu. Happy fall cooking!
