We buy in bulk as often as possible and spices are one area that you just get schnooked at the regular grocery, if you’re buying those teeny tiny containers they sell there! I love to make up my own dry mixes, and buying my herbs and spices in bulk gives that freedom to customize them to your family’s liking, and you know exactly what is going into those mixes (vs. the mystery packet from the store). So give it a whirl! Here is my recipe for homemade Taco Seasoning—yum!
Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe
- 3 T chili powder
- 4 1/2 t cumin
- 2 t paprika
- 3 t onion powder
- 2 t garlic powder
- 1/2 t cayenne pepper (adjust to your liking here!)
Combine all ingredients, stir up, and store in a tightly closed container—glass canning jars are cheap and great for this! I would start out with using 1 (heaping) tablespoon as an equivalent amount to the “packet” you’d buy in a store, and work your way up depending on your tastes. Mix up in bulk if you desire—very handy and very frugal!
